2012 Illawarra Junior Open Tournament Summary

Thank you to all local players and supporters of the Illawarra Junior Open played at Illawarra Tennis Centre (Rockdale) from 13th to 16th July 2012.  The event filled the 18 courts at the centre.    This tournament was a national ranking points white level event on the Optus Junior Tour.   It was for ages 16 and under, 14 and under, and 12 and under.   Over 190 players participated, and they enjoyed terrific weather.    There was some great tennis played, and some of our local players showed that they are up there with the best nationally.

At the Illawarra Junior Open, local junior tennis players featured.    Violet Apisah from Rockdale won the 12U girls singles and doubles.   Violet is currently ranked no.1 girl in NSW for 12 year old girls (born 2000) and is ranked no.7 for her age nationally.  She has won her last four tournaments including the Sydney Junior Open (gold event) in early July, which attracted players from all over the state.   Violet’s toughest match at the local Illawarra Junior Open was the final which she won 6-3 6-3 against her sister Patricia, who is a nationally ranked 10 year old and is also an exceptional talent.   The girls teamed up in the doubles to win that trophy also.   Another local winner was Maria Vais from Miranda, who defeated the #4 seed and the #1 seed on her way to winning the 16U girls singles.   To win the older age group is a tremendous effort for a girl who recently (as a 12 year old) came 5th in the national championships and has a current Australian ranking of 9th for her age.   Another recent highlight for Maria was winning the Medibank (Gold) Age championship in April.   She is coached by Justin Whyte who was Wayne Arthurs hitting partner on the tour.

In the boys draw, the winner of the boys 16U singles event was Ryan Smith from Barden Ridge.   Ryan also teamed up with Alex Mitton from Bathurst to win the boys 16U doubles title.   The Illawarra Junior Open is the third singles event that Ryan has won, and Ryan said that he was very proud to win his local event.

Event co-ordinator Martin Beanland said that he was pleased with the level of participation, especially by players competing in their first tournament.  Many local juniors won matches and received their first national ranking points.   Many of them were perhaps surprised that they competed so well, and they enjoyed seeing the level of other players of the same age from the greater Sydney area.    All main draw matches were the best of 3 sets, and players had a consolation match if they weren’t successful in their first match.    Due to the large number of entries, some of the matches were also played at the Ken Rosewall Tennis Centre in Peakhust.  Mr Rosewall was a junior tennis player in the Shire in the 1940’s and 1950’s – Mr Rosewall passed on his good wishes by phone to the players, although another commitment in Queensland meant that he was unable to attend the tournament this year.
